RELEASE DESCRIPTION
In a remarkable historical moment, sax player Steve Marcus embarked on a journey to Japan alongside jazz greats Herbie Mann and Woody Herman. Little did he know that this would mark a significant milestone not just for Japanese jazz, but also for the world of recording itself.
It was during this time that the first-ever work recorded on PCM digital audio came to life. The invitation extended by Inagaki Jiro set the stage for an unforgettable session featuring Inagaki and his jazz-rock unit, Soul Media. The lineup included the talents of Masahiko Sato on piano and electric piano, Ryo Kawasaki on guitar, Yasuo Arakawa on bass, Hajime Ishimatsu on drums, and Seiji Tanaka on drums. One standout piece from the album is "Fairy Rings," an original track by Sato that captivates with its precise interpretation.
As a special treat, the album includes a bonus track—an expansive 13-minute alternate take jazz rock/free jazz rendition of "Something," discovered during the 2013 CD reissue. This historic recording encapsulates the essence of a momentous era in jazz and stands as a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation of these visionary musicians.
